On Friday, May 20th, 2011 YPN in conjunction with the Florida Marlins Community Foundation and Dade County School board, hosted  A Day of Service honoring Foster Care month. The event included guest speaker, Dennard Mitchell who is one of the authors of “Ready Get Succeed, Making your Dream come True.” Mr. Mitchell educated the children on the ABC of success: Action, Believe, and Communication. The kids were inspired by the speakers’ remarks and some won copies of the books to take home. During his session, Mitchell stressed the importance of working hard, staying focused, and achieving success; a very important message for all youth but especially important for these foster children.

The event concluded with special appearances by Dr. Holloway from the school board, Marlin’s general Mike Hill, and Marlin’s catcher Jon Buck #14 who also sponsored t-shirts for the group. Hill briefly talked about his life and career challenges and the importance of having a great education.  Jon was kind enough to sign autographs and spend some time with the children.

For most of the children, it was their first time at Sun Life stadium.  The children had an opportunity to tour various parts of the stadium including the dugout, broadcast booth, media room, luxury suites, and club LIV. They also had a chance to get on the field and watch the players warm up. As the players headed back to the dugout, each of them received autographed baseballs by various players.

Special thanks to Reginald Bonhomme from the school boar, and Stephanie Gaywood and Alan Alvarez from the Marlins Community Foundation who coordinated with YPN Miami and facilitated a remarkable afternoon for the children. Also thank you to Mike Gelin, YPN Miami Civic engagement Chair, YPN members Tasha Wells Jermaine Chambers and Calonie Gray for serving as mentors to the children, Wanda Brantley, Program Administrator and Delores Dunn, CEO of the Center for Family & Child Enrichment, Inc.
