Tamika Nurse, a dual-degreed business woman with over 15 years of experience in Corporate America has leveraged her accounting, finance, and marketing skills to build a solid career with several Fortune 100 corporations and smaller privately held companies across a diverse set of industries ranging from financial services to consumer products to education. Her career success has also allowed her to coach many on how to effectively manage their own careers.

Tamika’s marketing background in the apparel industry includes the successful launch of a nationwide clothing brand in over 400 retail outlets with a debut at the famed New York Fashion Week.  A self-professed shopaholic-in-remission, Tamika began to feed her insatiable appetite for fashion when she got her first summer job as a teenager in New York City.  Over the years, her aesthetic was influenced by time spent in London and Paris as well as a brief encounter with the modeling and pageant world.  Her mother and grandmothers also influenced Tamika’s fashionable point of view, which continues to take shape and evolve even today.

Today, as CEO of It Girl Industries and author of “The It Girl Rules,” Tamika’s mission is to be of service to women of all ages who are already fabulous but need a little motivation to get to their next level – whatever that may be. Besides fashion and shopping, international travel is Tamika’s second favorite pastime and her travels to  Australia, South Africa, Jamaica, Trinidad, France, Italy, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Spain, and Mexico have all made an indelible impact on her world view.  Tamika’s goal is to make at least one international trip each year as she loves to learn about new countries and different cultures.

1)   As a young professional, how do you think you could benefit most from an organization such as YPN Miami and the Miami-Dade Chamber?

YPN Miami provides a forum for young professionals with vision and drive to come together, to learn from each other, and to stay sharp.  In my opinion, it is contagious and has an incredibly synergistic impact.

At the most recent YPN event that I attended, I received amazing advice regarding my website, fielded questions about my project, learned about additional marketing opportunities, and even sold my book, The It Girl Rules. It was really an ‘iron sharpens iron’ experience for me.   Had I not participated, then I would have missed out on the benefits offered by this organization.

2)  What inspired you to write your first book and how do you want it to inspire people?

I was inspired by my peers.  Over the past decade, many of my friends and colleagues have asked for my advice regarding their fashion and style choices – both men and women.  Since fashion is so near and dear to my heart, I didn’t hesitate to help whenever I could.  The It Girl Rules handbook is my formal reply to those questions that I have received over the years.

My goal is to inspire my fellow It Girls to make improvements based on their individual goals – while embracing their uniqueness and not trying to compete with anyone else.  I also want to empower women with practical information and resources related to style.  The It Girl Rules offers light-hearted and humorous straight talk that will be a catalyst for new ideas.
